ITINERARY: CHOOSE 1 OF THE FOLLOWING 5 OPTIONS

Option 1: PBS MASTERPIECE: DOWNTON ABBEY
Downton Abbey, the world-wide smash period drama, was made for the screen by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes and is filmed at Highclere Castle in Hampshire. The story is set in the early 20th century and revolves around the lives of an aristocratic English family and their servants. After an initial fast-track out from London, we visit the picturesque village of Bampton, in the heart of the Cotswolds, which was chosen as the location for the local village in Downton. Avid watchers may remember it as the scene for a local fair, or the place where the Crawley family arrive at ancient and historic St Mary’s Church, which can also be visited.

Opened to the public since 1986, Highclere is open during the summer months for Downton aficionados to view, and its majestic screen appearance has seen visitor numbers soar. See the library in which the head steward was blackmailed by his former music hall partner. See the drawing room where Dowager Violet shaded her eyes from the electric chandelier lighting and where scullery maid Daisy was often seen cleaning the marble fireplace. Or see the red bedroom, scene of the scandalous 'Turkish Gentleman' episode. Highclere's history stretches back to Anglo-Saxon times. In the 1770s it was rebuilt in the classical Georgian style with 1,000 acres of parkland landscaped by the famous Lancelot 'Capability' Brown. It was remodelled in the Victorian era by Charles Barry (who designed the Houses of Parliament) and essentially it is his work that we see today. During World War One it was an officer's hospital, as depicted in season two of Downton, and during World War Two a home for evacuee children. The original servants' quarters were not used in the series (a studio set was built for this), as much below stairs has been given over to an impressive Egyptology exhibition; it was 5th Earl who worked with the archaeologist Howard Carter in the famous 1922 discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings All-in-all a really fascinating, yet relaxing tour of the hit television series' locations.
● Open on selected dates during spring and summer (Sun-Thu only).
● April 2017: 18, 19, 20. (Check availability).
● Jul 2017: 10, 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 24, 25, 26, 27. (Check availability).
● Aug 2017: 21, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30 31. (Check availability).
● Your guide will conduct the tour.

Option 2: PBS MASTERPIECE: MIDSOMER MURDERS
After an initial fast-track out from London, this tour investigates the Thames Valley, made famous in recent years as a setting for the hit whodunnit tv series Midsomer Murders. Based on the books by Caroline Graham, it is now shown in over 200 countries. The original series featured over 200 suspicious deaths (and a surprising lack of media interest in the murder capital of England!).

Actor John Nettles’ character Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby could be seen in many episodes walking or driving through the real town centre which doubles as the fictional town of Causton. We might spot a budding TV star ourselves here, members of the local amateur dramatics society are frequently used as extras. A number of other haunts of Barnaby & co are visited. During the tour you will discover that the England of thatched cottages, village shops and cosy pubs really does exist, perhaps concealing the England of murderous mischief, devilish deeds and fiendish foul-play!
● Mon to Fri.
● No entry costs.
● Your guide will conduct the tour.

Option 3: PBS MASTERPIECE: INSPECTOR MORSE
After an initial fast-track out from London, this tour investigates the dreaming spires of Oxford, where Chief Inspector Morse (played by the late John Thaw) and his trusty sidekick Lewis (now with his own TV spin-off) battled against the secretive world of academia as they investigated crimes in the famous university town. The series stayed remarkably true to the original novels by Colin Dexter, not least because the author was prominent in the television adaptations.

Visit the Ashmolean Museum to see the jewel made famous by the popular early episode The Wolvercote Tongue. See the spot where Morse gives up the ghost in the very last episode, The Remorseful Day. Pop into the hotel that features the Morse Bar, renamed in honour of the character’s appearances here. We also visit a number of other locations that featured in the series, including colleges, historic buildings and Morse’s favourite respite, pubs!
● Mon to Fri.
● No entry costs.
● Your guide will conduct the tour.

Option 4: MUGGLE LONDON & HARRY POTTER STUDIO TOUR
Grab your broomsticks for this fantastical flight. An action day-out for wizard families with a sense of adventure! This tour starts by following the route of the triple-decker knight bus, ‘emergency transport for the stranded wizard', as it thunders along the Muggle streets. Along the way the tour uncovers the film locations for the Ministry of Magic, Diagon Alley and Gringott’s Bank. Both versions of the Leaky Cauldron are visited. Next, a photo opportunity at the platform 9¾ at King’s Cross, the famous station from where the Hogwarts Express departs. Also see the hotel where Harry and Ron take off in their flying car and drive by the place where Hagrid buys a hamburger (true!).

On the northern fringes of London is one of the most exciting attractions to open in the capital for many years: the film company Warner Brothers have built a superb studio tour and exhibition called 'The Making of Harry Potter' celebrating J. K. Rowling's classic children's adventures. Visitors can explore iconic sets from the movies such as the Great Hall at Hogwarts, Dumbledore’s office and Diagon Alley. Plus the Gryffindor common room, Hagrid's hut, and the Potion classroom. View original props such as Harry's flying broomstick, Hagrid's motorcycle, and the Hogwarts Sorting Hat, and find out about special effects, animatronics and CGI. There are exclusive video pieces featuring the cast and crew, plus a studio cafe and souvenir shop. Wizard!
● Usually open daily.
● Entry tickets must be pre-ordered.
● The tour is self-guided.

Option 5: ROALD DAHL & HARRY POTTER STUDIO TOUR
After an initial fast-track out from London, we take a pleasant drive through the Thames Valley, on the trail of children's classics. The tour visits Great Missenden, the home village of Roald Dahl, one of the world's bestselling fiction authors, with sales estimated at 100 million. Fans of the BFG, Matilda, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, can visit the Roald Dahl museum, shop and book locations. Dahl's burial place is close-by too. Pilgrims leave candy-bars on his grave.
