ITINERARY - CHOOSE ANY 1 FROM THE FOLLOWING 5 OPTIONS
Option 1: Wembley
In the morning the tour visits London places with strong connections to the English football history and heritage, including the famous private school where the rules of modern football originated. Your guide will explain how the capital had such a prominent role to play in the early development of the ‘beautiful game’. The tour also takes in all the famous London sights, including Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral, and the Tower of London.
‘We’re going to Wem-ber-lee, que sera, sera!’ In the afternoon the tour switches to Wembley Stadium, in north-west London, one of the most famous venues in the world. It was first built nearly 100 years ago and has seen a succession of great sporting contests and events. FA Cup Finals, rock concerts, including the famous 1985 Live Aid gig, and perhaps its crowning moment, the World Cup Final 1966 won by the host nation England. Now a new 90,000-seater stadium has been built, yet still the old ghosts and legends linger, as you will find out on the Wembley Stadium tour. Highlights include dressing room, royal box and dugouts.
Stadium tour entry fee payable (family/group rate available). Not included in tour price.
Pre-booking only. Tickets non-refundable. Tour dates dependent on match fixtures.
Option 2: Arsenal
In the morning the tour follows the format of Option 1, visiting London sites with strong connections to English football history and heritage, while taking in all the famous sights of the capital, including Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London.
‘Come on you Gunners!’ In the afternoon the tour switches to the Arsenal theme. ‘Good old Arsenal’, ‘Lucky Arsenal’, ‘Boring Arsenal’, the monikers have come and gone over the years. But few could argue that where this club is concerned, the word ‘tradition’ applies like no other. They were originally a south London club who settled cuckoo-like in north London, nest of Tottenham Hotspur. Not surprisingly the two have become big rivals. It is Arsenal who have had the bigger success. In fact, few teams can claim a more consistent trophy haulage in English football. This tour takes their London geographical movement into consideration. The south London roots, the art-deco glory of the former Highbury stadium, and the environs of the club’s local supporter base. We finish with the grand climax: a tour of the impressive new Emirates stadium, a 60,000 seater super-soccer-drome located just a stone’s throw away from the club’s former HQ.
Stadium tour entry fee payable (family/group rate available). Not included in tour price.
Pre-booking only. Tickets non-refundable. Tour dates dependent on match fixtures.
Option 3: Chelsea
In the morning the tour follows the format of Option 1, visiting London sites with strong connections to English football history and heritage, while taking in all the famous sights of the capital, including Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London.
‘Come on you Blues!’ In the afternoon the tour switches to the Chelsea theme. Currently the Champions, the cup holders, and the club everyone loves to hate. Perhaps the reason so many dislike the big blue monster is because of the little green monster: envious glances have been thrown Chelsea’s way ever since they were instantly elected to the league on formation in 1905, while other longer-established clubs waited decades for that cherished status. Nowadays, with the backing of a super-rich owner, the club has been catapulted into the global spotlight. Not the typical working-class roots for the club’s HQ either, located as it is in one of the world’s most affluent neighbourhoods. With all this ammunition, fans of other clubs like to point to a lack of history and tradition. They are clutching at straws. This club’s heritage is extraordinarily rich, and its unusual history truly fascinating. The ground is actually the oldest football league venue in London, and that is our grand climax: a tour of the Stamford Bridge stadium.
Stadium tour entry fee payable (family/group rate available). Not included in tour price.
Pre-booking only. Tickets non-refundable. Tour dates dependent on match fixtures.
Option 4: Tottenham Hotspur
In the morning the tour follows the format of Option 1, visiting London sites with strong connections to English football history and heritage, while taking in all the famous sights of the capital, including Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London.
‘Come on you Spurs!’ In the afternoon the tour switches to the Tottenham Hotspur theme. In terms of panache and style few have rivalled this club in their hunt for success. ‘Glory, glory Tottenham Hotspur’ sing the fans, and the club has never been shy of big signings to keep those fans happy. Bizarrely, for a club that consistently finishes in the highest echelons of English football, they are still considered a sleeping giant. The one bugbear in the lilywhite bonnets is the success of their north London neighbours Arsenal, and it is in the pursuit of their rivals where the Spurs’ hunger lies. Can the style-kings defeat the traditionalists? A larger new ground is in the offing, and will be easily filled by fans who are currently more raucous than their red rivals. In the meantime, this tour finishes off with the grand climax: a tour of Spurs’ current White Hart Lane stadium.
Stadium tour entry fee payable (family/group rate available). Not included in tour price.
Pre-booking only. Tickets non-refundable. Tour dates dependent on match fixtures.
Option 5: West Ham United
In the morning the tour follows the format of Option 1, visiting London sites with strong connections to English football history and heritage, while taking in all the famous sights of the capital, including Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London.
‘Come on you Irons!’ In the afternoon the tour switches to the West Ham United theme. A club literally forged from the ship building industry of the River Thames, the 'Happy Hammers' have traditionally a reputation for fine play which was developed during training techniques fostered in the 1960s. This subsequently lent to a proud nickname for the club’s culture: the Academy of Football. It famously produced three members of the legendary England 1966 World Cup winning squad: Martin Peters, scorer of the first England goal, hat-trick hero Geoff Hurst, and trophy-lifting captain Bobby Moore. Currently the Claret & Blues have a new management team hungry to recreate past success, so that previous pizazz that has been missing of late is surely not far away. The traditional local community has long since moved away from this part of east London. But every other Saturday they return in their tens of thousands, back to their roots, to get behind the club that has garnered legendary status in England’s football heritage. This tour finishes off with a grand climax: a tour of West Ham United’s Boleyn Ground stadium.
Stadium tour entry fee payable (family/group rate available). Not included in tour price.
Pre-booking only. Tickets non-refundable. Tour dates dependent on match fixtures.
